The Biblical Holy Herb. “HYSSOP”

PSALM 51:7 Purge me with Hyssop and I shall be clean. Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

Hyssop - A member of the mint family, (Hyssopus officinalis) is an evergreen shrub with thin, pointy, deep green leaves and narrow spikes of blue, white, pink or purple blooms, depending on the variety but native to Southern Europe. Some say hyssop is a purifying herb that cleanses the home when hung at doors or windows. According to folklore, the plant also offers protection from the evil eye. The plant has a long history of folklore in ancient Europe and was often hung in homes for protection. 

Benefits - The plant has been used in herbal medicine for the treatment of sore throats, colds and congestion, shortness of breath, bruises, muscle aches, head lice, to prevent spread of infection, hoarseness, and as an expectorant. Some herbalists also believe that hyssop has beneficial effects for asthma, skin irrational, urinary tract inflammation, and appetite stimulation. Its effectiveness in relieving gas and colic also are listed under its medicinal uses. The antioxidant properties in Hyssop flowering tops help to support upper respiratory immune function as well as calm bronchial and respiratory muscle tension.

That being said, experts warn that the plant should be used sparingly and with great care, as hyssop is a powerful herb that can cause convulsion or seizures when taken in large amounts. Most sources say the herb is safe in small quantities, but warn that it shouldn’t be used by pregnant women.
